Join Plimoth Plantation on April 30, from 6:30 9:30 p.m. for a tasting event that will showcase select artisans of New Englands booming craft distillery industry. Now in its second year, Living ProofCelebrating the Makers, will be held in the Museums recently-expanded Craft Center, where several New England craft distilleries and cideries will be on tap for a spirited, fascinating gathering.
The craft of distilling spirits has come a long way since the early 17th century when sugarcane growers on Barbados learned from Brazilians how to ferment the by-product of sugar-making and distill the result to make kill-devil, a drink that was infinitely strong, but not very pleasant in taste, according to British author Richard Ligon, who travelled to Barbados in 1647. Also called Rumbullion for a British slang word meaning a brawl or violent commotion, it was described by a traveler to Barbados in 1651 as a hot, hellish and terrible liquor.
The vendors that will be featured will be pouring samples of their wide variety of premium small-batch spirits. The experts on hand will help tasters to identify the unique qualities imparted by various grains, spices, botanicals and metal cask vs. wooden barrel aging techniques.
The event will include spirit-inspired food pairings, a cash beer and wine bar against the backdrop of live bluegrass performed by the band Slaterville Volunteers.Plimoth Plantations Foodways Culinarian Kathleen Wall will be on hand to share fun facts about the use of spirits by the Pilgrims and Native cultures of 17th-century Plymouth.
Tickets are $50 for one or $90 for two and are available by registering on this site, or by calling Becky Wright at (508) 746-1622 x8226.
